Full-size gilt rendering of Athena, with the legend "Hagae Comis," to front and back (Probably the coat of arms of The Hague.) Decorative rolls to borders and spine. Internally immaculate. DUELLO: Libro de Re, Imperatori, Principi, Signori, & de tutti Armigeri [The Duel: a book for kings, princes, lords, gentlmen and all who bear arms, containing conflicts, agreements, settlements, actual incidents, and judgments, with explanations, examples, and the authority of poets, historians, philosophers, lawyers, canon lawyers, and clerics. A most worthy work, and useful to all noble spirits.]. [Venice, Comin da Trino, 1540]. Octavo. Unpaginated. [233]ff. An Italian Renaissance treatise on the rules and history of duelling, first published in Naples in the 1470's. It became the standard handbook, consulted by duellists to resolve all questions of location, formal challenge, weaponry, choice of judge, and all other details of the rules of combat, including the complex matter of establishing the winner. The author (also known as Paride del Pozzo) (1415-1495) was born in Piedmont, and made a career in jurisprudence in Naples, where he enjoyed the patronage of Kings Alfonso and Ferdinand. Small amount of worming to cover; slight discoloration to last page, else fine in early vellum, with title inked neatly on spine. With frontispiece and twelve plates showing coin portraits of the Roman emperors. First blank inscribed "Wm Amory Gardner, Paris Aug. 15th 1887." Gardner, raised by his aunt Isabella Stuart Gardner, was one of the founders of Groton School. He dated in pencil a few of the pages, presumably to chart his reading progress. Occasional faint spotting; one plate detached; else fine in later vellum boards with gilt decorated spine. This edition, first published in 1772, was described as "assez bon" by Brunet. $375.00

A handsome edition, "in usum delphini." A beautiful copy, internally very clean, in contemporary vellum boards with blind-stamped cartouche. Marcus Verrius Flaccus (ca. 55 BC - ca. 20 AD) the teacher of the Emperor Augustus' grandsons, completed an encyclopedic dictionary ("On the Meaning of Words"), the contents of which are known today only from a lengthy summary written about 150 years later by Sextus Pompeius Festus. Festus' work, although only the second half of the alphabet survives, contains a wealth of information on life under Augustus. Theodore Lyman Jr.'s copy.
