1978. Item #90409

Uemura Rokuro 上村六郎 . Nishikiori Taikanzen Edojidai (Chūgoku) Genjin/Motondo Shiki 錦織大鑑 全 江戸時代 (中国) 元人識 . n.p.: Showa 53 [1978]. 32 x 39.5cm double accordion fold album comprised of hand-mounted samples of vintage fabrics housed in a 35.5 x 43.5cm custom wooden box with ribbon ties.

Patterned fabric-covered front board has handwritten title label that reads Complete Brocade Encyclopedia Edo Period (Western Japan), with the pen name (read either as Genjin or Motondo) of the compiler, Uemura Rokuro, and his seal in Japanese. Gold paper lined inner boards.

Vintage cloth woven in Western Japan in the Edo Period (1603 - 1869) in an album compiled in Showa 53 (1978) by Uemura Rokuro. Includes a small hand-written note with date on Japanese paper. Likely compiled in Kyoto, where Rokuro was a lifelong inhabitant.

A total of 67 samples of pictorial and floral motifs as well as stripes and abstract designs in rich colors including fabric embroidered with metallic thread and silk. The album itself was assembled with painstaking attention to detail; fabric is attractively arranged and mounted and framed on Japanese paper. A noteworthy page has a fabric piece mounted in a cloud shape, below two gold metallic rosettes.

上村六郎 Uemura Rokuro [1894 - 1991?] was perhaps the most influential scholar of traditional dyeing techniques of both cloth and paper in Japan and was also an expert on international techniques of traditional dyeing. Uemura was the author of numerous books and articles on these subjects over the course of his long life.

A lovely album. Some fading to fabric and damage to wooden box.

Price: $3,500.00
