New York: Harper & Brothers, 82 Cliff St. 1838. First American edition. Two 12mo. volumes: x, [11]-451; x, [13]-476 pp. Engraved portrait in vol. 1. Bound in publisher's brown cloth, gilt-stamped title within a triple-rule frame at spine. Early ink ownership stencil (of Edward Bayard) twice in each volume. Light to moderate foxing throughout, being heavier on the endpapers and blanks. Front hinge of vol. 1 is starting. Faint marginal dampstaining at the top-edge of both volumes and on the lower board of vol. 1 and the upper board of vol. 2. Cloth shows moderate soiling overall, with occasional ink splatter to cloth and bottom edges of book blocks. A touch of wear at spinal ends; and the upper board of vol. 2 is gently bumped at the top-edge. A solid copy in very good condition. (Martin & North, p. 170).
