A TILLYLOSS SCANDAL

1893. Item #72229

BARRIE, J. M. A TILLYLOSS SCANDAL. New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, n.d. [1893]. First American edition, first state; paper wrapper issue, with the publisher's East Tenth Street address on t.p. and front cover, and a list of seven other Barrie titles on the back cover. 270 pp. Octavo, buff paper wrappers printed in brown. Quite clean internally, though the final few leaves have a sliver of dampstaining along the fore-edge. Wrappers show moderate all-over soiling and have darkened slightly at spine. Near-fine overall and uncommon. A Tillyloss Scandal is an unauthorized collection of stories and articles that had appeared in periodicals during the years 1887-92. A first issue in a paper wrapper format was customary at that time in American printing due to the prevailing practice of piracy. Publishers rushed paper copies through the printer and bindery in an effort to quickly deliver them to newsdealers as a means of standardizing the market. (Cutler 33).
