1863. Item #75332

FONBLANQUE, Edward Barrington de. NIPHON AND PE-CHE-LI; or two years in Japan and Northern China. London: Saunders Otley and Co., 1863. Second edition. Illustrated with five colorplates, four fold-out black-and-white plates, a fold-out map, and small text illustrations. Octavo. [4],286,[1] pp. Blue cloth, gilt-stamped title and decoration to spine, sides blocked in blind, yellow endpapers. Ink ownership on p. 1, with pen and pencil notes on the dedication page and the final blank. The first few colorplates are foxed in margins, with some foxing on the facing text page; otherwise, the text is clean. One of the b&w folding plates ("Japanese Play Bill") has irregular loss at the fore-margin which enters the plate. The bookblock is split near the center but still within the binding, which shows general wear and scuffing. A complete and useable reading copy, it is offered with all faults.
