Second edition, enlarged. Five folding copper engravings showing surgical instruments. The seven volumes of Richter's Basic Surgery were published between 1782 and 1804. This volume concerns surgery of the head, and shows some complex instruments for trepanning and other procedures. Richter (1742-1812) was for many years professor of medicine at Gottingen. He lectured and worked in almost every field of medicine, but his major contributions were in surgery and ophthalmology. He edited "Chirurgische Bibliothek" for twenty years. His name is best known today in connection with "Richter's hernia" (see Morton 3578). Attractively bound in recent half-linen and marbled boards. Light dampstain to first three leaves; occasional foxing and toning; library stamps. (Walleriana 7961; only three copies in OCLC).
