Typeset as the British first edition (Hammond & Anderson A5a.i) except for pages  & , the title leaf, now with the Houghton Mifflin imprint on recto and `Printed in Great Britain' on verso, and , where the Allen & Unwin publisher's device has been removed and is now blank. 423 pp., +  blank page. Lacks map of Middle Earth at rear (Apparently it wasn't bound with one: there is no indication of there ever having been a map present. However, a map from another edition is laid in). 8vo., blue cloth stamped in gilt to spine and upper board, top edge stained yellow. Spine slightly rolled; gilt has dulled; faint shelfwear to corners and spine; faint dark spot to spine. Nevertheless, very good overall.
