1883. Item #85732
[COPPER ENGRAVING] MATSUURA YASU, artist. NIKKÔZAN MEISHÔ JÛNIKEI. Nikko: Shiozawa Ken'ichiro, Meiji 16 . The original sheets (from a folding album?) have been remounted on Japanese paper and fukuro-toji string binding. The cover of the original series is a bit edgeworn worn but the 12 hand-colored copper engravings, each about 12 x 17.5 cm, of sites around Nikko, waterfalls, river views, etc., are lovely - well-printed and well-preserved. From an interesting period aesthetically, when Japanese artists and craftsmen were introducing Western-derived techniques like lithography and engraving into printmaking, printing and the allied arts on a popular level. Unusual work.
