Toppan 凸版 ‘65. NP [Japan 1964]. 18.7 X 27.5 cm. 2p + 44pp. Stiff wrappers. Relief printed designs for washi papers. Very interesting salesman's sample book of designs for matchbox labels (rinpyō 燐票). Over 200 designs for 5.5 x 8cm and 5.5 x 3.7 cm sizes with many tipped-in paper samples. Japanese text throughout.

Initial page in green ink has an introduction geared toward companies, guiding them in selecting a design. The following page has 4 stacked paper samples tipped in on the left side of the page and 4 on the right, in lovely, bright and muted colors and designs. The following 3 pages have tipped-in samples; the first 2 pages have 10 tipped-in samples each, 5.5 x 3.7cm, with various designs, colors and scripts, and the third page has 4 tipped-in samples 5.5 x 8cm. Pages 4-11 have 4-10 unique designs per page, many with metallic pigment. Pages 12-14 have tipped in samples in the same sizes as above, in an aquamarine, silver and gray colorway with touches of burnt sienna. Pages 15-38 have 4-10 unique designs per page, similar to earlier pages, with touches of silver or gold to many. Pages 39 and 40 have four sample matchbox covers on heavy washi paper tipped in on each page, while the final 4 pages are similar to earlier pages with designs. Each design is numbered. Over 200 distinctive abstract, floral, pictorial and graphic designs with no two alike that we can see.

Some dust staining and toning. Large tear on front wrapper at top right corner; wear to front and rear covers. Last section of pages have more toning than earlier pages. Overall, a good copy of this very scarce and ephemeral catalog.
