Thacher was a military surgeon during the American Revolution; he supported the execution of the spy John Andre and wrote a book about it. He also wrote "A Military Journal during the American Revolutionary War" (1823). His Dispensatory paved the way for the first United States Pharmacopeia. (Wellcome V, 248).
