26.6 x 19 cm volume, string-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-toji with brushed title slip. Interesting collection of 19 color printed images of kakemono 懸物: fragrant curative talismans made of leaves and flowers with aromatic herbs tucked inside. They date as far back as the 12th century and are mentioned in the classic Heian period work, The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari, 源氏物語) by Murasaki Shikibu 紫式部. They were often decorated with ribbons and hung in doorways and on verandas to ward off disease, hence the term “kakemono” (kake, 懸, hanging and mono, 物, thing).
