Mingei-gami KUREHA 民芸紙 くれは. Kyoto. Showa 32 . Large oblong folio 25.9 X 40.3 cm, in light green brocade covers with a printed paper title label. Initial page is a foreword with the title Furukatagami Raisan 古型紙禮讃 [Praiseworthy Traditional Stencilled Papers] in Japanese text with the date of Showa 32 . The title is written along the sheet edges in ink in Japanese. There are 30 pages of color, stencil-dyed, patterned papers, mounted one or two to a page within paper frames, either 12 x 27cm or 15 x 12cm. Many of the stencils are in the deep, rich colors of the Mingei 民芸 (folk art) tradition, such as dark green, navy brown, earth brown and burnt sienna. Each pattern is numbered 1 - 30 with the title beneath. Housed in a navy tied chitsu folding box.
Toning of the foreword and the rear of sheets. Wear and chipping to chitsu, with fabric split on the back. A few of the latter pages are detached from the binding.
Superb quality. For all intents and purposes, a lost art.
