Bookplate to pastedown and signature in ink to ffep. of J. Amory Jeffries. Francis Maitland Balfour (1851-1882), noted British naturalist died at the age of 30 in a mountain climbing accident. Darwin had said that his young colleague would "one day be first among English Biologists". Huxley had refered to him as "the only man who could carry on my work".(ODNB) Uncommon.
