MAEKAWA Sempan, artist. Original illustrations for "PIN-CHAN, THE FLYING HORSE" 10 sheets. 2 sheets are about 28 x 20 cm. The other eight sheets are about 20 x 13 cm. Expertly drawn and colored by the estimable Sempan, a painter, illustrator and printmaker of the Creative Print school, whose work was much admired both before and after the War. Here he has created two little picture books, PINCHAN, THE FLYING HORSE, volumes four and five. Charming children's illustrations of the adventures of a little boy and his full-size toy flying horse that could and did. I have found no sign of PIN-CHAN anywhere, so perhaps the series was never converted into print and published, but great fun and a terrific source of insight into the stories and creative preoccupations of the art world in mid-century Japan, when politics was dangerous at both ends of the conflict. The drawings are clean and in very good condition. If forced to a date, I would say about 1950, but I just don't know for sure.
