ÔKYO GAFU

1850. Item #89975

[EHON] Maruyama Ôkyo, artist. ÔKYO GAFU. Kyôto, Hishiya Magobei, Kaei 3 [1850]. Brocade original covers, and printed title label, 27.5 x 18.5 cm. A large and lovely book based on Ôkyo's works, published here for the first time in 1850. Ôkyo is one of the most important artists of the 18th century and the Maruyama-Shijô school became probably the most dominant artistic school in western Japan. There is some confusion with this book because it was republished during the Meiji period as both EN-Ô GAFU and ÔKYO GAFU in a lesser edition and there was another book titled ÔKYO GAFU published in the 1830s which was a totally different book. So, in short, this is the book discussed by Hillier in his large compendium (see pp. 704, 715-6 and Mitchell 441, example "A"). There is some gutter staining and occasional repaired worming, but it is a very unusual book and quite fragile. Enclosed in a clasped chitsu folding case.

Price: $4,750.00
