Rokkakudō Ikenobo 六角堂池坊, et al., artists

[Ikebana 生け花 - Flower Arranging] [Handscroll - Emaki 絵巻] Rokkakudō Ikenobo 六角堂池坊, et al. Emaki Handscroll with 34 Flower Arrangements.

27.0 cm high scroll, in a brocade cover with bone jiku scroll handles. The flower arrangement examples depicted date back to masters of the late 17th and early 18th century and this rendition seems consistent with a mid to late 18th century production date, though it is undated. Rokkakudō Ikenobo 六角堂池坊 was the title of a Buddhist priest connected with the Rokkakudō 六角堂 (Chōhōji 頂法寺) Temple in Kyoto, known as the birthplace of Ikebana. Ikenobu 池坊 refers to the pond (ike, 池) and small hut (bo, 坊) where the priests live. There is a hexagonal stone in the temple grounds (rokkaku 六角, six sided) that is said to be the center of Kyoto.

In lovely condition overall, an excellent example of the genre. Examples primarily of rikka 立花, a formal style of Ikebana established in the Muromachi period in which the flowers are embedded in sand in containers. In a deluxe inner and outer wooden and brocade box.

Price: $5,500.00
