CHIKUDÔ GAFU

1800. Item #90054

[EHON] Ki CHIKUDO. CHIKUDÔ GAFU CHIKUDÔ GAFU NIHEN. [Kyoto, Kansei 12 {1800}, Bunka 12 {1815}]. 27.9 x 17.1 cm. A total of 22 double page color printed illustrations in Nanga style. Butterfly-bound album, original blue-grey covers, title labels. No colophons. No two copies of this book that I have seen have the same ordering, pagination, or text pages. Comparing to the copies of the two series in Mitchell, this copy has all the images called for, plus the 6 of the 10pp of remarks on Chikudô's work, plus one of the ishizuri-printed prefaces. Close comparison with several copies, including the examples at the MFA in Boston and the Spencer collection in NY leads me to think this is at least an equal, if not a superior copy. Most probably issued about the time of the late Bunka era appearance of the second series or soon thereafter. The CHIKUDÔ GAFU is one of the most beautiful of Japanese illustrated books, a true masterpiece of Nanga style design and any Edo era example is very unusual and desirable. This example is extraordinary and in very good condition. Chikudô was a native of Kyoto. In a pair of matching clasped chitsu cases.

Price: $6,500.00
