CHIKUDÔ GAFU

1800. Item #90059

[EHON] Ki CHIKUDÔ. CHIKUDÔ GAFU CHIKUDÔ GAFU NIHEN. [Kyoto, Kansei 12 {1800}], Bunka 12 [1815]. 27.9 x 17.1 cm. A total of 22 double page color printed illustrations in Nanga style. Butterfly-bound album, original blue-grey covers, title labels. No colophon in the first series, colophon in the second. When the second series came out, I believe that a reprint of the 1st series was issued at the same time, without a colophon and with a title label matching the characters of the second series. It would appear from the copies I have seen that the first series early printings had a different title label style. This copy at hand has the early printing style of title label. Hence, I would hypothesize it was published sometime between the first series original edition in 1800 and the second series appearance in 1815. No two copies of this book that I have seen have the same ordering, pagination, or text pages. Comparing to the copies of the two series in Mitchell, this copy of the pair has all the images called for, plus 8pp (of 10) of remarks on Chikudô's work, plus 6 ishizuri-printed prefaces and calligraphy, and 4 pages of a table of contents and colophon. Close comparison with several copies, including the examples at the MFA in Boston and the Spencer collection in NY leads me to think this is at least an equal copy. The CHIKUDÔ GAFU is one of the most beautiful of Japanese illustrated books, a true masterpiece of Nanga style design and any Edo era example is very unusual and desirable. This early example is extraordinary. Chikudô [c.1775-1825] was a native of Kyoto. This copy is in very good condition, each series in its own clasped chitsu case.
