1935. Item #90200
ONCHI Koshirô, editor. A set of SHOSÔ Magazine. Tokyo, Showa 10-19 [1935-44] Aoi Shobo. [700cc?]. A large collection of the premier journal dedicated to the book arts and graphics of its day, edited by the foremost artist and book designer, Onchi Koshirô, and filled with graphic and textual contributions by contemporary giants. Shoso had some 103 numbers issued in two formats, either as octavo-size, paper-wrappered magazines or as simple pamphlets of 4-8 pages. This set is comprised of 30 of the 31 magazine format issues, lacking only issue #79, and 6 of the slender pamphlet issues from the late 1930s, which have proven to be quite ephemeral and scarce, along with 2 postcards and an envelope from the artist Takei Takeo and Onchi. It is an unusual collection, especially with the scarce pamphlet issues, postcards and envelope, and with such an extensive near-complete run of the more substantial magazine issues, since several have sought-after prints by Onchi and Yasunori Taninaka, among others. Very good condition overall.
