Shōhō 尚峰, Kahō Sanbei 雲峰, Tsutsumi Tōrin 堤等琳 and Kubo Shunman 窪俊満, artists. Momo Saezuri 百さへづり (A Hundred Twitterings) Edo: Tsutaya Juzaburo 蔦屋重三郎 Kansei 8 Orihon folding album 25.3 x 18.3cm with hand painted boards and original printed title label is housed in a modern chitsu. There are 6 original color woodblock prints in all, one each by Shōhō 尚峰 and Kahō Sanbei 雲峰, two each by Tsutsumi Tōrin 堤等琳 and Kubo Shunman 窪俊満 (1757-1820) with kyōka 狂歌 (satirical tanka poems) in Japanese text.
Hillier in his “Art of the Japanese Book” considers this perhaps the most famous of all kyōka anthologies and the Shunman woodcut of the two beauties in kimono boarding a boat perhaps the best-known image of the genre. “The Shunman print is a delicious rendering of two women boarding a pleasure boat, held steady by a manservant. This is a triumph of asymmetry, not only in the placement of the main weight of the composition on the left-hand side, but in the incidence also of the colour in that area, the right-hand side being in monochrome, with only the distant bank of the river and the ripple of moving water seen through the slanting shafts of rain.” Hillier p. 442.
This is a very nice printing in original condition, and there is wear to boards, several old worming repairs, mostly along margins, and slight toning to some pages, but overall quite lovely still. A cornerstone of any ehon collection.through the slanting shafts of rain." Hillier p. 442.
