[EHON] Chô GESSHÔ 張月樵, (1772-1832) artist. FUKEI GASÔ 不形画藪. Nagoya: Eirakuya Tôshirô & Matsuya Zenbei The title page lists Keinundô Tôbei as publisher. Bunka 14 . 28.1 x 18.1 cm. A gafu style anthology of Gesshô's wide pictorial range. A truly lovely book which Hillier is very enthusiastic about (see THE ART...... pp. 553-556). See Mitchell, pp. 253-4, with original soiled blue-grey covers and printed title label. The priority of the various issues, Matsuya Zembei (Shokadô) alone [see Ryerson 390 & the Schlosser sale], Matsuya Zembei and Eirakuya Tôshirô[see Odin 177 and the Holloway sale], and our own and Mitchell's collaboration between Eirakuya and Keiundô (the latter appears nowhere else in Mitchell) is, according to the Holloway sale cataloguer, moot, as all seem to be early and contemporary.
The impressions are very good and the overall condition good, with one page with a few mild marginal stains, and the covers are worn, the original title worn, as well. With sumi writing to front and back covers... But, internally, the printing and colors are very good - the mild tones of late Bunka, early Bunsei in Shijô style. With its inspired eccentricity of vision and sparse and arbitrary coloration, FUKEI GASÔ is never boring and often brilliant. Complete.
