Fugaku Honsha 富岳本社, publisher. Nihon no Sansui 日本の山水. Showa 21 [1946].Tōkyō. 26 x 18.6cm volume bound Western style with decorated wrappers, opens Japanese style. Wrappers are decorated in a blue and green floral design. Title page decorated with an unattributed woodcut. 66 pages with a final note on the last page. 3 page index, [2] pp bios of the 21 poets and colophon with publisher’s hanko tipped in at end. Three original, color woodblock prints are tipped in, among 64 pages of poetry in Japanese text. A tribute to Japanese landscape in poetry and prints in this book of “Japan’s Mountains and Waters,” published just after the end of WWII.

Compiled by Inoue Yasufumi 井上康文 and Onchi Kōshirō 恩地考四郎 (1891-1955), an established printmaker and book designer, and published by Fugaku Honsha 富岳本社, the publishing house known for issuing books by Onchi. The first woodcut in the book is by Yamaguchi Susumu 山口進 (1897–1983), the second is by Azechi Umetarō 畦地梅太郎 (1902-1999) and the third is by Maekawa Senpan 前川千帆 (1888-1960).

Handwritten names on inside front wrapper and front free endpaper, with additional notes and a photocopy of a newspaper article photo laid down next to a handwritten name and hanko in red. Photocopy of a handwritten Japanese text laid down on rear free endpaper and inside wrapper. Names of 3 the artists are handwritten at the top of the page with each woodcut.

Chipping to wrapper corners and to bottom of spine, where only a small section remains. Tear at top of p.51. No slipcase.
