26.2 x 28.8cm hardcover illustrated children’s book with decorated covers and Japanese text throughout. 39 pages with illustrated endpapers and inner covers. The inside front cover has a short summary of the book in the upper section. The rear endpapers have an illustration of Mount Shiretoko with an afterword by the author as well as a biography of the author above the colophon. Colorful illustrations along with text in kanji and furigana, narrate the expedition of a group of elementary and middle school students who climb Mount Shiretoko, a volcano in Hokkaido that is over 4,000 feet. The children and their adult leaders walk through rocky terrain, climb cliffs and camp in caves during their adventure that explores the flora and fauna of the landscape during their five day/six night trip. Many double page illustrations, including a spread of animals, plants, historical figures and other informative pages, all originally done in his unique style of stencil prints (katazome hanga 型染版画) - here reproduced in offset.

The author and illustrator Sekiya Toshitaka 関屋敏隆 (1944-) was born in Okayama-ken and attended what is now Kyoto University of Art (京都市立芸術大学) where he studied traditional dyeing and weaving techniques. He illustrated his first book in 1976 and since then has written and illustrated over 50 children’s books, many of which have won awards.
