[EHON] SESSHOUSAI [Terai Shigefusa]. EHON SHUUYOU.. 3 vols. Osaka, Houreki Gan-nen ... 26.1 x 18.4 cm. Original blue string-bound covers with printed paper labels. An interesting compilation of designs. Sesshousai was trained in Kano school art as is evident in this picture book..... He was also known as a student of the great ukiyo-e artist from Osaka, Nishikawa Sukenobu.... He created several works in the mid 18th century. This set of three is jo, chu, ge.... There has been very little work done on this work. But there is a record of three volume sets from later in the century.... There is also a copy extent which claims to be volumes one and two in the first series and volume one in the second series. No such series designation appears in this copy and it retains the colophon of Kashiwaraya Seiemon with the first printing date of 1751. That said, my instinct is to call this a slightly later printing in the 3 volume format by the original publisher. It should also be noted that Kashiwaraya was publishing other books with a Kano feel by such Kamigata artists as Yasukuni.... A clean copy in a good printing, enclosed in a custom clasped chitsu.. Very worthy example of the genre.
