FRANCE, Anatole. THE WORKS OF ANATOLE FRANCE IN ENGLISH. Edited by the late Frederic Chapman and James Lewis May. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head Limited, v.d. (1923-1929). 40 of 42 unnumbered volumes; titles in this "new popular edition" were uniformly bound but sold individually. Small octavo, orange cloth stamped in gilt to spine and in blind to upper board, with an orange paper dust-jacket. Contemporary ink ownership and maxim (taken from Matthew Arnold) at the beginning of each volume, with pencil bracketing in margins throughout and very occasional underlining in text. Three volumes have some dampstaining; one of which has bowed boards. Most volumes have a bright binding beneath a sunned, and occasionally edgeworn, dust-jacket. A good reading edition comprising a large selection of France's work. (The missing volumes are "Marguerite, and Count Morin Deputy, together with Alfred de Vigny, and The Path of Glory" and "Prefaces, Introductions and Other Uncollected Papers.") The final volume, uniform with the others, is "Anatole France and His Circle" by Paul Gsell.
