SAITO MUSASHI-BO BENKEI. VOL. 2 ONLY

1910. Item #78275

DE BENNEVILLE, James S. SAITO^ MUSASHI-BO^ BENKEI. (Tales of the Wars of the Gempei) Being the Story of the Lives and Adventures of Iyo-no-Kami Minamoto Kuro^ Yoshitsune and Saito^ Musashi-bo^ Benkei the Warrior Monk. Volume II. Yokohama: Published by the author, 1910. First edition of volume two (of two) only. Color frontispiece, 47 b&w plates, and a folding map. Octavo. [xii],453 pp. Publisher's binding of green cloth with gilt-stamped title to upper board and spine. This was the author's copy, identified as his "personal copy" in ink on the upper board and spine. It would appear that deBenneville was making plans to issue a revised edition of this work toward the end of his life. He used this copy of volume two as his workbook: Within, de Benneville made corrections and annotations in pencil throughout, occasionally pasting in manuscript or typed additions. Laid-in at the end is a 12 pp. handwritten manuscript of "Benkei Jo^shi no Dan" to be inserted as Appendix B, replacing "Yoritomo as Statesman" which de Benneville evidently planned to incorporate into the main text. This is an important guide and reference to the development of deBennevills's thought on the subject, especially as SAITO^ MUSASHI-BO^ BENKEI is generally regarded as his best and scarcest work. This unique copy of volume two is over-opened and a few leaves are sprung at the end due to the additional material that is laid-in. A very important association item and the final word on BENKEI according to deBenneville. Volume two, only (of the original two) As described:.
