[PHOTOGRAPHY - COLLOTYPE ILLUSTRATIONS]. OGAWA, K., publisher. ILLUSTRATIONS OF JAPANESE LIFE. Described by S. Takashima. Tokyo: Published by K. Ogawa, n.d. (circa 1892). Additionally, "Kelly and Walsh, Limited, Yokohama, Hongkong, Shanghai and Singapore' are named as sole agents on the title page. [2] ff. + 97 full-page color collotype illustrations reproducing photographic images of people and daily life in nineteenth century Japan. In his preface, Ogawa thanks K. Tamamura, S. Kajima, and Prof. Burton for some of the images reproduced in the book. Each image has a caption printed below it, often followed by a brief explanatory text. Small folio. 36 x 26.8 cm (14 1/4" by 10 1/2"). Bound in elaborate boards composed of color illustrations printed on silk within patterned brocade frames and tied with purple ribbon. Gold speckled endpapers. A.e.g. A fine copy, bright and fresh in all respects. This title is seldom seen in this format and condition; it is more familiar in several smaller crepe paper versions, usually with only twelve illustrations in each, that bear the same title. Housed in a contemporary (and possibly the publisher's) decorated paper-covered chitsu case which is split on one side and has some loss on one narrow panel.
