18. Item #91243

[MONSTER EMAKI] Yoshida Kôkin. HYAKKI YAGYOU NO ZU. Brocade covers, approximately 13 inches tall and 14 feet long. In an old wooden scroll box with a brushed title. A lovely skillful rendition of the NIGHT PARADE OF ONE HUNDRED MONSTERS... a famous work from the later 15th, early 16th century..., There are many versions, but the most important is probably the one at Daitokuji temple in the Shinjuan.... Said to have been painted by Tosa Mitsunobu but the attribution has never been proven. There are many versions, but the one at hand, painted by Kôkin [1803-76] seems quite faithful to the Shinjuan version, albeit with a different color scheme. Kôkin was quite an influential and well regarded painter of late Edo and early Meiji. He has done a wonderful job here of capturing the humor and the the implied danger of the monster genre. In very nice condition.
